Perhaps the first French narrative film depicting lesbian themes, Olivia (alias Pit of Loneliness) is a 1951 production directed by Jacqueline Audry. It is adapted from Dorothy Bussy's 1950 semi-autobiographical novel and is acclaimed as a "landmark" in portraying lesbian relationships. In this film, Olivia enrolls in a finishing school and falls in love with the headmistress, Mlle. Julie, who reciprocates her feelings but struggles to restrain her desires. Edwige Feuillère, who portrayed Mlle. Julie, was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Actress in 1952 for her role.Jacqueline Audry, a French director, created 18 feature films between 1944 and 1972. Her earliest works exemplify the high standard of French cinema. Audry preferred narratives derived from French literature and distinguished herself from her contemporaries by primarily focusing on female protagonists, contrasting with the traditional French cinema's male-centric narratives. Among her films, Olivia (1951), which tackles lesbian relationships, stands out as the most controversial.
